TSA nationals 2016

Southern Middle School TSA took 17 students to national competition at the end of June. The students have been preparing for months starting at the regional, state, and now the national levels. TSA is an organization that is offered to students through Mrs. Davis' Engineering Technology classes at SMS. TSA teaches leadership, problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and career skills that students will use in their future, while incorporating the various areas of STEM education.

Kainat Syed placed 6th in Essays on Technology
Mason Smith placed 11th in Promotional Marketing


* Incoming 6th Graders

Register for Spartan Academy (Camp Storm) to ease the transition into middle school. Students will meet their teachers, get their schedules & lockers, and make new friends all before school starts.
Spartan Academy is Wednesday, August 2. Check in from 9:00 - 9:30 with a parent. Pick up is at 11:00. Fill out the registration form and return to Holly Morrow.

Back to School Rallies:
The YMCA of Central Kentucky in partnership with the Fayette County Public Schools and in collaboration with 15 Lexington neighborhoods, is hosting the 10th annual Back to School Rallies this Saturday, July 30, 2016. These rallies will provide more than 7,000 elementary, middle and high school children with free backpacks and school supplies. Each of the 15 neighborhoods will distribute supplies for all grade levels.  More information about this event can be found on the flier

* Dress Code Policy:
The Dress Code Policy for the 2016-2017 has been updated.  Several changes have been made so more focus can be on instruction and student achievement.

* Playing sports in 2016-2017?
Any student planning to try out for a sports team will need to have a current Athletic Sports Physical. The form has been updated since last year. Open the link "General Adminstrative Forms" then open "MS01...Middle School Physical Form"

 

* Leading the way: STLP Students
Congratulations to Duane Keaton and the Southern Films group for their outstanding showing at the State STLP Competition this weekend.  SMS Southern Films achieved 1st place in both the Cinemania and PSA categories.  They also received the award for Best Showcase Project from Regional Group.  Congratulations to Duane and these dedicated students for their hard work and their accomplishments!  Good job and keep up the great work!

* Southern Students Supporting our Community
What a giving group of students here at SMS! A BIG thanks to all those who gave money to help support these worthy organizations.

** Mrs. Turbek would like to give a big shout out to SMS students who paid $1 to wear a t-shirt or a hoddie to help riase money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. A total of $276 was collected. To learn more about how this money is helping what this video. If you would like to doante more or participate in a walk, follow this link.

** Student Council raised money for the American Heart Association by oraganizing the Grade Level Penny War, Hoodie Day, & T-shirt/Hat days. The total collected was $450.

** Technology Student Association (TSA) would like to thank for your donations that totaled $519 in support of the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge.
