Southern Middle School provides ALL students high levels of academic instruction while developing strong character and independence.

*Straight Talk for Parents About Drugs

In support of our continued efforts to help educate students about the dangers of drugs during Red Ribbon Week, we offer a presentation by the Director of Law Enforcement for FCPS to give parents current and relevant information about the substances in our community, and how they can better protect their children and educate them about these dangers.  This is for parents only
We hope you make EVERY effort to attend. Parents who attend leave with a t-shirt/hoodie pass for their student. Please see the attachment for more information and RSVP to holly.morrow@fayette.kyschools.us

* Yankee Candle Fundraiser

Orders can be picked up in the Front Office from 8:00 - 4:00.

Thanks to all those students who participated in this fundraiser. Money raised will go towards the purchase of Chromebooks.

* Hurricane Harvey Relief Help
Student Council collected over $1,400 for Abraham Lincoln Middle School in Port Arthur, Texas.  All donations will help this school and the students who attend Lincoln Middle. Thanks for your generousity!

* 8th Grade Students
The application period for the majority of high school program options for the 2018-2019 school year is currently in progress. The application window is from August 15 to October 7, 2017 for the following school year.  It is not a first-come, first-served system. Applications may be submitted anytime during the window, and all receive equal consideration.  The online application is found on the FCPS website at www.fcps.net.


The Special Programs Information Night is set for September 14, 2017 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Henry Clay High School. Representatives from all Gifted & Talented, Magnet and Specialized Academic Schools/Programs will be presenting information and answering questions about their programs. Some programs will additionally hold Open Houses at their schools following the Information Night.

Congratulations to our 8th Grade volleyball players who are the 2017 Bluegrass State Game Gold Division champions.


* TSA National Results

Sixth grader, William Allen, placed 6th in the nation in the Career Prep competition and 9th in the nation in Digital Photography. Alex Alaniz, Lucas Wright and Troy Nolan made the top 12 finalists in Medical Technology. There were over 8000 people in attendance at this year's conference in Orlando, Florida. Eleven Southern Middle students participated and represented Fayette County well.

* Run like the wind!
Congratulations to our girls’ track and field team! They tied for third place in the KTCCCA Middle School State Championships, held June 3 at the University of Louisville. Read the story here.

* FAME Award Nominations

We want to congratulate the following SMS teachers for their FAME Award nominations.  Ms. Weaver from the 8th Grade Titans team, Mr. Gerken and Ms. Marshall from the 8th Grade Warriors team, and Mr. Tyree from the 7th Grade Gladiators team were all nominated by former students who felt they made a big impact on their education.  We are so proud and lucky to have these teachers at Southern!

Student Council says a BIG thanks to Southern Spartans for donating winter coats, scarves, and other items for the Salvation Army.

* Girls' Basketball
Congratulations to the girls' basketball team for earning the Academic Award for the highest GPA in the Middle School District. We are proud of your hard work in the classroom!

* Dress Code Policy:
The Dress Code Policy for the 2016-2017 has been updated.  Several changes have been made so more focus can be on instruction and student achievement.

* Leading the way: STLP Students
Congratulations to Duane Keaton and the Southern Films group for their outstanding showing at the State STLP Competition.  SMS Southern Films achieved 1st place in both the Cinemania and PSA categories.  They also received the award for Best Showcase Project from Regional Group.  Congratulations to Duane and these dedicated students for their hard work and their accomplishments!  Good job and keep up the great work!

* Southern Students Supporting our Community

* Canned Food Drive
Thanks to the families who brought in canned food to support God's Pantry. We appreciate your support.

** The volleyball team collected around $100 during their Dig Pink night for the American Cancer Society.

** TSA collected items for the Louisiana flood victims in support of "From the Bluegrass to the Bayou."





** Mrs. Turbek would like to give a big shout out to SMS students who paid $1 to wear a t-shirt or a hoddie to help riase money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. A total of $276 was collected. ** Student Council raised money for the American Heart Association by oraganizing the Grade Level Penny War, Hoodie Day, & T-shirt/Hat days. The total collected was $450.

** Technology Student Association (TSA) would like to thank for your donations that totaled $519 in support of the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge.
