Our Mission

Southern Middle School provides ALL students high levels of academic instruction while developing strong character and independence.

* Cyber Safety: what parents need to know
Southern is hosting a parent night on March 23rd from 6PM - 7Pm in the Library that will focus on Social Media issues with middle school students. Join Detective Anthony Young of the Lexington Police Department to discuss topics such as: cyberbullying, sexting, keeping private information private, parent controls on devices, and apps children are using now.

This is for parents only and child care is not provided.

* Tennis Intramurals starting soon

Learn to play and compete in a fun format in the school gym. Players will play on Wednesday & Friday mornings for 4 weeks. No experience necessary! There will be a Middle School Tourney at Bluegrass Racquet Club on Sunday, May 7th from 5pm-7pm for anyone who would like to play.

When: Wednesday & Friday April 12th- May 5th, 7:50am -8:30am. Meet Mrs. Hager out front just like our other intramural sports.

* Southern Music Department

Congratulations to our Southern bands and orchestras on earning distinguished ratings at their annual assessments! The 6th and 7th/8th combined bands and orchestras both gave outstanding performances and represented our school very well. Their directors could not be more proud!

* Hard work pays off

Congratulations to the Technology Student Association Members that competed in the regional competition on Friday.  They did a great job representing Southern Middle and are looking forward to the state competition in April. 
Students placed in the following events: Career Prep, Challenging Issues, Children's Stories, Digital Photography, Flight, Inventions and Innovations, Leadership Strategies, Medical Tech, Prepared Speach, Problem Solving, Structual Engineering, Tech Bowl, Technical Design, Video Game Design, and Web Site Design.

* FAME Award Nominations

We want to congratulate the following SMS teachers for their FAME Award nominations.  Ms. Weaver from the 8th grade Titans team, Mr. Gerken and Ms. Marshall from the 8th grade Warriors team, and Mr. Tyree from the 7th Grade Gladiators team were all nominated by former students who felt they made a big impact on their education.  We are so proud and lucky to have these teachers at Southern!

* Henry Clay Girls' Soccer
There will be an informational meeting for all NEW & Returning players on March 21st at 6:30 in the HC cafeteria.

* Academic Team Moves On
Southern students did very well at the District Govenor's Cup competition. They earned 1st place in District 58 for quick recall by surviving two overtime matches. They placed 2nd in Future Problem Solving. Both the quick recall team and the Future Problem Solving team will advance to the regional tournament at Beaumont on January 30th and February 4th. Nine students also placed in their written assessments and will advance to regionals.

* Winter Garmet Drive
Student Council says a BIG thanks to Southern Spartans for donating winter coats, scarves, and other items for the Salvation Army.

* Girls' Basketball
Congratulations to the girls' basketball team for earning the Academic Award for the highest GPA in the Middle School District. We are proud of your hard work in the classroom!

* Dance Team Wins
Big congratluations to the Spartan Dance Team. They won 1st Place in Jazz, Pom, and Group Combination (Small Team). In addition, they took home 2nd place in Hip Hop (Small Team) and they received the Leadership Award, an award given by the other teams.

* 8th Grade Field Trip
8th grade students visited Locus Trace AgriScience Center. Read about their trip.

* Volleyball Team Wins City Championship:
Congratulations to the B Team for winning the City Tournament. They will be honored by the School Board on Monday, October 24th for their success.

* Dress Code Policy:
The Dress Code Policy for the 2016-2017 has been updated.  Several changes have been made so more focus can be on instruction and student achievement.

* Spirit Wear

* Playing sports in 2016-2017?
Any student planning to try out for a sports team will need to have a current Athletic Sports Physical. The form has been updated since last year. Open the link "General Adminstrative Forms" then open "MS01...Middle School Physical Form"

* Leading the way: STLP Students
Congratulations to Duane Keaton and the Southern Films group for their outstanding showing at the State STLP Competition this weekend.  SMS Southern Films achieved 1st place in both the Cinemania and PSA categories.  They also received the award for Best Showcase Project from Regional Group.  Congratulations to Duane and these dedicated students for their hard work and their accomplishments!  Good job and keep up the great work!

* Southern Students Supporting our Community
"Generousity: the habit of giving freely without expecting anything in return." What a giving group of students here at SMS!

* Canned Food Drive
Thanks to the families who brought in canned food to support God's Pantry. We appreciate your support.

** The volleyball team collected around $100 during their Dig Pink night for the American Cancer Society.

** TSA collected items for the Louisiana flood victims in support of "From the Bluegrass to the Bayou."





** Mrs. Turbek would like to give a big shout out to SMS students who paid $1 to wear a t-shirt or a hoddie to help riase money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. A total of $276 was collected. ** Student Council raised money for the American Heart Association by oraganizing the Grade Level Penny War, Hoodie Day, & T-shirt/Hat days. The total collected was $450.

** Technology Student Association (TSA) would like to thank for your donations that totaled $519 in support of the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge.
